The selected candidate will:

  • Develop multi-vehicle, variable degree-of-freedom simulations and perform analysis of ascent, aerocapture, entry, descent, and landing trajectory design across various NASA and commercial spaceflight programs
  • Provide software development and scripting of NASA's Genesis Flight Mechanics Simulation tool and related applications
  • Design and execute analyses to compare the performance of different guidance algorithms
  • Demonstrate the use of the core Flight System (cFS) in Genesis
  • Develop, integrate, and test new algorithms for the evaluation of vehicle and mission performance
  • Integrate Genesis with core Flight System and other trajectory software and tools
  • Develop requirements documentation for mission design products
  • Provide recommendations for improvements in design and software development processes
  • Perform other duties as required

Essential Functions

  • Work Environment-Generally, an office environment can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
  • Physical Requirements-Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).
  • Equipment and Machines-Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
  • Attendance-Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside regular schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
  • Other Essential Functions -Professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2- 5 years of experience in the field or a related area.
  • Experience with spacecraft guidance algorithms, orbital mechanics, and spacecraft trajectory design
  • Knowledge in the development of spacecraft mission design algorithms and analysis of spacecraft performance
  • Experience developing, verifying, and validating simulation models
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment consisting of NASA civil servants and various contractor employees
  • Strong interpersonal skills to enable successful performance in a collaborative engineering environment
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and schedules with limited supervision
  • Ability to prepare written documents and to verbally present at various meetings
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products
  • Requisition Preferences:
  • Master of Science or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering with a focus on trajectory design, optimization, and orbital mechanics

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience with 6-DOF spacecraft simulations
  • Experience implementing the NASA core Flight System (cFS) framework
  • Proficient in Julia, C++, Fortran, Python and Linux
  • Experience in product delivery and management utilizing source code management tools such as Git/GitLab
